Sandra Powell, 1965–2020
Carer
Sandra first trained as a hairdresser and after taking a break to raise a family in 2017 she started a career as a carer. It was while working in a Leominster Care Home in 2020 she contracted Covid 19 and passed away in Hereford County Hospital’s intensive care unit just 8 days after testing positive. Her family were honoured to see how people showed their support by lining the streets and applauded in Sandra’s honour as her funeral procession drove through the town, recognising her contribution and dedication to caring for local people with additional needs and learning disabilities.
Sandra was the youngest child of Bill and Betty Apperley and a sister to Michael, Carol, Janet, Valerie, Robert, Shirley and Christopher.
They all attended local schools and enjoyed a happy childhood in Leominster. When Sandra left school, she trained as a hairdresser and attended Keith and Peters College in Hereford, then in her early 20’s she met Paul. They spent their lives devoted to each other and became Husband and Wife in 2015. They were blessed with two children, who over the years started their own families, creating a new role for them as Grandparents.
After having children, Sandra began a career in Care. She then started gaining more qualifications to assist with her new profession by undertaking Open University courses and care soon became a job she loved dearly and was very passionate about. She started out at Lynhales Nursing home at Lyonshall then moved closer to home to and began working at Waverley house in Leominster.
Sandra was a loving and devoted family orientated person, especially when it came to her grandchildren. She stopped working for several years to assist with looking after grandchildren and enjoyed taking them on days out and growing sunflowers in the garden.
Sandra returned to work at Newman’s care home in late 2017 where she worked until April 2020 when she contracted the Covid 19 virus. She passed away in Hereford County Hospital’s intensive care unit just 8 days after testing positive. Sandra’s death shook the local community and all that knew her personally, but her family were honoured to see how people showed their support in such strange times as many of the local townspeople including family and friends lined the streets and applauded in Sandra’s honour as her funeral procession drove through the town to show how appreciated and loved she was as well as how grateful they were for the her continued contribution and dedication to caring for local people with additional needs and learning disabilities.
It wasn’t until later life that Sandra began to enjoy holidays abroad which became the one thing she enjoyed doing when not working, her first being to Benidorm with the girls from the Waverley. It soon became her favourite place to travel and visited multiples times with her daughter Becky. Only twice did she venture away from this destination, going to Greece and Menorca, only to regret the decision and want to return to Benidorm.
Memories
